LAURIE DAVID

Laurie David is devoted to political and environmental activism. She is principally focused on global warming and fuel economy issues.

A trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Board and a founding member of the Detroit Project, David has spear-headed numerous public education and action campaigns urging Congress and auto-makers to raise fuel efficiency standards and make better and safer cars. She also co-chairs NRDC's Action Forum and Executive Forum with fellow trustee Elizabeth Wiatt.

In addition, David is on the Board of Air America, then newly launched progressive radio network. She sits on the advisory board of California's Children Nature Institute, and has created and chaired several major Los Angeles fundraising events, raising millions of dollar for the environment and public arts education.

She is a passionate campaigner for candidates who believe in environmental protection, reducing our dependency on oil and the need for better energy security in America.

In 2003, David was honored by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Riverkeeper organization. When presenting her with the award, Kennedy referred to David as his "environmental hero". That same year, David was honored by Los Angeles' Children's Nature Institute for her commitment to the environmental education of young children.

In January of 2004 NRDC opened the David Family Environmental Action Center. Endowed by the David family, the Center encompasses much of David's passions and dedication for the environment and activism to protect it. It features museum-quality exhibits on issues such as global warming, ocean pollution, everyday toxins, and green building solutions. An overhead timeline places environmental milestones in historical context. The Center also sells outdoor clothing, gear and accessories made from sustainable materials, including recycled plastic bottles and organic cotton.

Before working full time on environmental and political issues, David had a distinguished career in entertainment spanning two coasts. She began her career in New York City as a talent coordinator for the David Letterman show. Four years later she left to start her own management company, representing many of today's top comedians as well as comedy writers. She also produced several comedy specials for HBO, Showtime, and MTV and Fox Television. Upon moving to Los Angeles, David became vice president of comedy development for a division of Fox Broadcasting and developed sitcoms for Twentieth Century Television. In the summer of 1998, David produced her first feature film, Sour Grapes.

Married to comedian Larry David, they live in Los Angeles with their two daughters.

Let Detroit know that inefficient cars and trucks have kept Americans chained to the gas pump, and American security chained to foreign oil, long enough. Send them an email from the NRDC Break the Chain Web site.
